Palawan fisher groups urge recall of Chinese ambassador after threat remarks

Fisherfolk in Palawan backed lawmakers' call to have Chinese Ambassador Jing Quan recalled after his statement that Beijing could easily win with force against the Philippines.

At a press event in Palawan, representatives of the Atin Ito Coalition and multiple fisherfolk groups endorsed a legislative push to recall Chinese Ambassador Jing Quan following his claim that China could easily win if it used force against the Philippines. Co-convenor Rafaela David, also president of the Akbayan Party, denounced the ambassador's threats and urged his removal. The call is backed by organizations such as SAMAKKO, SAMBIL OG, Kalayaan, and others representing local fishermen and indigenous communities.

Senator Risa Hontiveros has filed a resolution asking President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. to declare Jing Quan persona non grata. The Malacañang Palace said the matter would be handled by the Department of Foreign Affairs, which summoned the envoy to express the country's serious concern and objection.

Why it matters

The move reflects rising Filipino opposition to Chinese diplomatic rhetoric amid ongoing disputes in the West Philippine Sea.
