Paris metro and RER stations shut down Saturday night amid urban unrest

Several metro and RER stations in central Paris were closed Saturday night as authorities responded to ongoing urban violence.

In response to persistent urban violence, the RATP and SNCF confirmed that several metro and RER stations in Paris would be closed Saturday night. On the RER B, entrances to Châtelet-Les Halles were shut and trains ran between Saint-Michel - Notre-Dame and Gare du Nord without stopping, before night-time works began at 22:45. The RER A also bypassed Châtelet-Les Halles from 22:00.

Metro lines 1, 4, 7, 11, 14 and others closed access to Châtelet, with line 11 suspending service between Hôtel de Ville and Châtelet, and line 4 closing Les Halles. République station was similarly restricted on lines 3, 5, 9 and 11, while line 8 trains did not stop there due to works. These actions come after a curfew was imposed in the République and Les Halles neighborhoods, a helicopter patrol over the centre, and comments from Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu that curfews had helped calm the night and that further restrictions would be decided where needed.

Why it matters

The closures disrupt commuter travel and signal heightened security measures in Paris amid rising unrest.
