Paris police impose temporary bans on fuel, gas and protective gear amid unrest
The Paris police prefecture issued orders until Thursday prohibiting the transport of fuel and flammable gas in personal containers, as well as bans on protective equipment near schools and on pyrotechnic items.
In response to weekend looting and violent incidents, the Paris police prefecture announced a series of emergency orders effective until Thursday. The primary decree bans the carriage of fuel and flammable gas in individual containers throughout the Paris metropolitan area, including the departments of Hauts-de-Seine, Seine-Saint-Denis and Val-de-Marne. Two supplementary orders apply the same timeframe and geography: one prohibits the use of protective equipment within a 100-metre radius of secondary schools and higher-education institutions, and the other blocks the acquisition and possession of pyrotechnic devices.
The measures follow a partial curfew imposed between 23:00 and 06:00 on Place de la République and the Halles district, as well as a ban on public assemblies after 20:00 near train stations and key government sites. Authorities say the restrictions aim to prevent further spillovers of unrest and protect public safety.
Why it matters
The bans aim to stop fuel-related hazards and curb violence during a period of heightened social tension in Paris.
