PAS leadership urged to clarify stance on Negeri Sembilan royal crisis and dismissed assemblyman

MP Syahredzan asked PAS leaders to state their position on the removal of Tuanku Muhriz as Yang Dipertuan Besar and the dismissal of a PAS assemblyman by the ruler.

In a statement, MP Syahredzan questioned the central PAS leadership on its view of the ongoing Negeri Sembilan royal crisis, specifically the attempt to lower Tuanku Muhriz as Yang Dipertuan Besar and the subsequent dismissal of a PAS assemblyman by the ruler. He demanded a clear, unambiguous party position and asked how PAS leaders are involved in the dispute. Fadhli Shaari, PAS’s information chief, responded that state constitutions stipulate that exco members serve only with the monarch’s approval and raised the issue of whether DAP would accept similar dismissals elsewhere.

The crisis began in April after four assembly members claimed to have removed the ruler, a claim later rejected by the Attorney General’s Department and the Court of Justice, which affirmed Tuanku Muhriz’s legitimacy. Following that ruling, the ruler removed ten exco members, stating their appointments required his consent under the state constitution.

Why it matters

The story shows how a major political party is handling a constitutional dispute that could affect governance in Negeri Sembilan.

How the sides frame it

MODERATE AGREEMENT

Left-leaning coverage emphasizes the political controversy and precedent of the ruler’s unilateral removal, while centrist coverage stresses the resulting governance deadlock and questions the chief minister’s legitimacy.

LEFT

Frames the story as a political dispute over the ruler’s unilateral dismissal of exco members and its implications for opposition parties and federal handling.

CENTER

Frames the story as a governance crisis and deadlock caused by the ruler’s dismissal of the state cabinet.

The left emphasises

  • unilateral removal of state executive council members without the chief minister’s advice
  • potential precedent for states where DAP holds power
  • reflects on the federal government’s handling of the crisis
