Perikatan Nasional to contest Melaka state election under coalition logo

Perikatan Nasional will run the Melaka state election using its own logo, with candidates to be unveiled on Oct 29.

Perikatan Nasional confirmed it will contest the 16th Melaka state election using the coalition's logo, with a full list of candidates to be announced on Oct 29. The coalition remains open to allowing its component party Bersatu to run under its own emblem, in line with Clause 16 of its constitution, pending approval. Secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan noted that both the total seats to be contested and the candidate roster are still being finalised.

This move follows a Kuala Lumpur High Court order staying the Registrar of Societies' suspension and deregistration of Perikatan Nasional pending a judicial review. The Election Commission has scheduled nomination day for Oct 31, early voting for Nov 10 and polling for Nov 14, after the state assembly was dissolved on Sept 23. In the 2021 election, Barisan Nasional won 21 of 28 seats, Pakatan Harapan five, and Perikatan Nasional two, and the coalition aims to avoid candidate clashes with Barisan Nasional.

Why it matters

The coalition's branding and candidate strategy will shape competition in the upcoming Melaka state election.
