Perikatan Nasional undecided on fielding candidates in upcoming Sarawak election
Perikatan Nasional has not yet decided whether to contest the Sarawak state election, saying its immediate focus remains on the Melaka polls.
During a press conference at the Himpunan dan Munajat Penyatuan Ummah event, Perikatan Nasional secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan announced that the coalition has not yet made a decision on contesting the Sarawak state election, which will be triggered by the assembly's dissolution on Monday. The coalition's current priority is the imminent Melaka polls, and any Sarawak decision will be discussed shortly. Takiyuddin said he has not received directives from PN president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang to hold a meeting, although a PN gathering is scheduled for tomorrow.
He emphasized that PAS, the Islamist party within PN, has consistently fielded candidates in Sarawak since 2001 but has never secured a seat in the country's largest state. The remarks highlight PN's strategic calculations ahead of two simultaneous state contests.
Why it matters
PN's choice will shape the political contest in Malaysia's largest state and affect the balance of power ahead of two state elections.
