Philippine lawmakers move to declare Chinese ambassador persona non grata over force remarks
Chinese Ambassador Jing Quan said China could easily win a conflict with the Philippines if it used force, prompting condemnation from Philippine officials. Ten members of the House, led by Leila de Lima, submitted House Resolution 1562 urging President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to declare the envoy persona non grata or ask Beijing to recall him. In the Senate, Senator Risa Hontiveros introduced Senate Resolution 746 calling for the same action.
President Marcos indicated he will allow both chambers of Congress to pursue the resolutions. The Chinese embassy in Manila responded with language challenging the proposal and warning of possible restrictions on Philippine officials entering China.
