Philippines weighs three candidates to lead the DICT after Aguda's resignation

The Philippine government has accepted DICT Secretary Henry Aguda's resignation and is considering three nominees for the post.

The Malacañang administration confirmed the resignation of DICT Secretary Henry Aguda, citing public scrutiny over the agency's temporary ban of Discord and an Ombudsman investigation into alleged irregularities in the Free Wi-Fi initiative. In response, the Presidential Communications Office announced that three individuals are being evaluated to fill the vacancy. David "Dave" Almirol Jr., currently the DICT undersecretary for e-Government and founder of the software firm Multisys Technologies, is noted for his technical background and leadership of the eGovPH Super App.

Former presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda, who co-founded fintech company PayMongo, is also in the running. The third contender, Alexander "Aboy" Paraiso, serves as executive director of the Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center. No final decision has been made, and the new chief will be tasked with steering the country's digital transformation agenda.

Why it matters

The appointment will shape the Philippines' digital strategy and oversight of key tech initiatives.
