PNL vows to mount toughest opposition to PSD after Niculescu government investiture
PNL vice-president Alexandru Muraru said the party will become the most combative opposition in decades, starting Tuesday, following the parliamentary vote that installed Luca Niculescu’s cabinet.
After the parliamentary vote that approved Luca Niculescu’s cabinet, Alexandru Muraru, vice-president of the National Liberal Party, declared that the party intends to build the strongest and most aggressive opposition seen in recent decades, beginning on Tuesday. In a Facebook post, he pledged to scrutinise every government decision, appointment and expenditure, and to bring any misconduct to light. Muraru blamed the Social Democratic Party for betraying Romanian citizens, stifling reforms and turning public hopes into a bargaining chip for power.
He highlighted PSD’s recurring patterns of clientelism, wasteful spending and protection of privileges. Party leader Ilie Bolojan, speaking after the party’s internal vote, justified the conditional support for Niculescu’s investiture as a “vote of necessity” to prevent a breakdown of essential institutions after a prolonged crisis. Muraru also praised Bolojan as a future cornerstone of democratic opposition, warning that public anger should not be exploited by radicals threatening Romania’s European trajectory.
Why it matters
The stance signals a major shift in Romania’s parliamentary dynamics, potentially intensifying partisan conflict and affecting government oversight.
