Police disperse housing-rights tents in Lisbon and Porto, detaining dozens and reporting injuries

Police units cleared tent encampments in Lisbon’s Rossio and Porto’s Praça D. João I, arresting several protesters and confirming injuries.

In Lisbon, PSP intervention forces descended through Baixa, Rua do Ouro and Rua Augusta, forcing protesters to flee and toppling trash bins, chairs and tent remnants as they cleared the Rossio area. The operation, coordinated with Porto police, also targeted demonstrators there, setting up an outer perimeter at Praça D. João I and detaining individuals who resisted. Police relied mainly on shields and handcuffs, noting a small number of visible injuries among those who fell.

Despite repeated megaphone warnings and a three-minute deadline, many activists maintained a human chain around the tents, chanting slogans. BE deputy Fabian Figueiredo declined to mediate, accusing authorities of escalation, while PSP officials warned that retaining the tents after 00:30 would constitute disobedience. The police emphasized dialogue but prepared rapid-response units for further action.
