Police impose public-order restrictions in Gosport after migrant boat landing

A boat carrying 149 migrants arrived in Gosport, prompting protests that led Hampshire Constabulary to activate emergency public-order powers and a town-wide dispersal order.

Following the arrival of a small boat with 149 migrants in Gosport, local residents assembled near Haslar Marina, some setting off flares during the protest. The migrants received initial medical examinations before being moved to a main processing facility in Kent. In response to the unrest, Hampshire Constabulary applied emergency public-order powers, issuing a Section 35 dispersal order that allowed officers to direct people to leave specific areas.

A nearby car park was earmarked under a Section 14 order as a designated space for lawful demonstrations. Police arrested six individuals on suspicion of public-order offences. The incident has reignited debate over how authorities balance safety and the right to protest when small-boat arrivals occur in coastal towns.
