Protesters clash with police as migrants arrive in Gosport on rescue boats

Migrants were transferred to RNLI vessels near Gosport, prompting protests that turned confrontational with police and the use of flares.

Ship-tracking data showed a migrant dinghy followed by French rescue vessels before RNRI boats intercepted it in English waters, with the Home Office reporting 149 migrants on board. The Border Security Command prepared to disembark the arrivals, transport them to short-term holding facilities in Kent and conduct health, security and biometric checks. Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary sent officers, ambulances and coaches to Gosport in anticipation of an emergency at sea.

Protesters assembled near Haslar Marina; while the majority stayed peaceful, reports indicated flares were set off and minor clashes with police occurred. Police enforced Public Order Act restrictions and prohibited face coverings during the demonstration.
