Polish fuel price caps nudged higher as wholesale costs rise

In early October the government adjusted the maximum retail price caps for fuel, setting 95‑octane gasoline at 6.83 zł per litre, 98‑octane at 7.71 zł and diesel at 7.74 zł, a small increase from the previous day. Earlier in the week the caps had been set at 6.79 zł, 7.66 zł and 7.82 zł respectively. At the same time wholesale prices for diesel rose by 22 gr per litre and gasoline by 17 gr per litre, while the Minister of Energy announced new maximum retail ceilings of about 8.06 zł per litre for diesel and near 7 zł for gasoline.

President Karol Nawrocki signed a law imposing a levy on extraordinary profits earned by fuel firms and referred the measure to the Constitutional Tribunal for review. State‑controlled oil company Orlen also announced substantial wholesale price cuts for several fuel grades.

Why it matters

Consumers see lower pump prices now, but higher caps and rising wholesale costs could affect future fuel costs.

How the sides frame it

LOW AGREEMENT

Center coverage reports detailed Czech and Romanian fuel price caps and how the government set maximum permitted prices, while right-leaning coverage focuses on Poland's price-cut package, highlighting retail declines, wholesale rises, and the government's stance on VAT.

CENTER

Center coverage presents the story as a governmental price-cap measure, detailing the specific maximum prices and noting the caps were introduced to curb rapidly rising pump prices.

RIGHT

Right-leaning coverage portrays the story as a policy success that lowered retail fuel costs in Poland, while also stressing rising wholesale prices and the government's refusal to cut VAT.

The right emphasises

  • retail prices of gasoline and diesel fell, making Poland among the cheapest in continental Europe
  • wholesale fuel prices are climbing despite the retail cuts
  • the government is not considering a VAT cut on fuel
