Polish police detain Ukrainian suspect linked to Russian plot against arms official
Polish authorities arrested a Ukrainian man accused of trying to bomb a Ukrainian defence industry figure in Irpin on behalf of Russian intelligence.
Polish prosecutors and the Internal Security Agency announced the detention of a Ukrainian citizen, Serhii P., suspected of orchestrating an assassination attempt on a Ukrainian defence sector official in Irpin, close to Kyiv. According to investigators, he concealed a makeshift explosive beneath the target's vehicle, intending to trigger it remotely via a mobile phone, but a malfunction prevented detonation. After the botched plot, the suspect crossed into Poland, where he was apprehended in Warsaw.
He now faces charges of attempted murder with explosives and unlawful possession of explosive material, carrying a possible sentence of at least 15 years up to life imprisonment. Authorities emphasized that the incident demonstrates how Russian intelligence services employ operatives across borders to conduct sabotage. The Russian embassy in Poland has not responded to requests for comment.
