Porsche plans additional job reductions amid Volkswagen's financial strain

Porsche intends to cut further jobs beyond existing agreements, following a board proposal linked to Volkswagen's weakened outlook.

Documents from a Volkswagen supervisory board meeting in early September reveal a proposal to further reduce staff in the Sport Luxury division, which houses Porsche, beyond the cuts already agreed. Because Porsche is structurally autonomous, Volkswagen can only advise, not mandate, these reductions. Porsche previously announced a plan to eliminate thousands of jobs by 2035 and had already committed to a major reduction in its 2025 "Future Pact," while also pledging to avoid compulsory dismissals and to protect its Zuffenhausen and Weissach facilities.

The latest move reflects Volkswagen's recent downgrade of its operating margin outlook for one outlet year, largely due to a multi-billion-euro write-down on Porsche. A key factor is the collapse of Porsche's Chinese market, where sales of the Cayenne have fallen dramatically. The broader German auto sector has shed tens of thousands of jobs this year, prompting regional leaders to urge swift action from the national government and the EU on trade conditions with China.

Why it matters

The cuts highlight the ripple effect of Volkswagen's woes on Porsche and the German auto industry's employment outlook.
