Portugal schools face possible Monday closures as education staff strike

A 24-hour strike called by SINAPE could force some Portuguese public schools to close on Monday, depending on staff turnout.

SINAPE has announced a 24-hour strike beginning at midnight and lasting until the close of Monday, targeting non-teaching staff in Portugal’s public education and social services, including operational assistants, administrative assistants, specialised and senior technicians. The union’s demands focus on wage increases, defined career structures, adequate staffing and recognition of their work through the SIADAP evaluation system.

School groups in the Algarve’s Alcoutim, as well as in Guia, Esposende and Lousã, have already sent notices urging families to confirm school opening times and to arrange alternative childcare if necessary. While teachers remain available, schools may lack the personnel needed for supervision, facility upkeep and administrative tasks, potentially leading to closures or reduced services such as meals and support. The ultimate impact will depend on the number of participants, and officials will decide on a case-by-case basis on Monday. Parents are advised to stay informed through official school channels.
