PP and Vox lock down Senate talks to secure right-wing majority
PP negotiator Miguel Tellado and Vox’s Montse Lluis are intensifying sealed talks aimed at forming a Senate alliance that could give the right a three-fifths majority.
Miguel Tellado and Montse Lluis, representing the People's Party and Vox respectively, are leading intense negotiations to forge a Senate coalition that could secure a three-fifths majority for the right. The agreement would enable the bloc to renew key institutions such as the Constitutional Court, named after Cándido Conde-Pumpido. Talks centre on transferring autonomous senators to Vox as compensation for its decision not to run in around twenty provinces, and on future Senate roles, including a possible Vox presidency.
Both parties have agreed to keep the discussions under wraps, promising only to disclose the outcome, which may be announced by the coming Monday. The negotiations are seen as crucial to prevent a left-wing control of the upper chamber and to satisfy right-wing voters who expect a deal.
Why it matters
A right-wing Senate pact could reshape Spain's legislative balance and influence key institutional appointments.
