PP and Vox seal historic Senate pact to secure three-fifths majority
The Partido Popular and Vox have agreed on a joint Senate list for the upcoming election, aiming to reach a three-fifths majority and block left-wing initiatives.
The Partido Popular and Vox concluded a historic electoral agreement for the Senate, targeting a three-fifths majority that would enable them to dominate key institutional renewals. Negotiations intensified in the final legal window, spurred by an initial social-media message from Santiago Abascal. Under the deal, Vox will not run separate lists in Las Palmas, Tenerife, Cádiz, Valencia, Castellón and the Balearic Islands, where the PP will include independents proposed by Vox.
In fourteen provinces the PP will field three candidates while Vox presents only one, and the PP will forgo contests in Guipúzcoa, Gerona and Tarragona. The pact seeks to neutralize the left’s joint front and avoid institutional deadlock, especially concerning the renewal of the Constitutional Court. Ignacio Garriga presented the agreement in a video statement, highlighting its significance for future right-wing governance.
Why it matters
The alliance could give the right a decisive block in the Senate, shaping Spain's legislative and judicial landscape.
