President Dan appoints Siegfried Mureșan as Romania’s prime‑ministerial candidate

President Nicușor Dan signed a decree naming liberal MEP Siegfried‑Vasile Mureșan as the official candidate for prime minister. The constitution gives him ten days to present a governing programme and a proposed cabinet to Parliament for a confidence vote. Mureșan has said he will seek a coalition with the National Liberal Party, the Save Romania Union and the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania, even though the three parties do not hold a parliamentary majority together.

The Social Democratic Party’s Permanent National Bureau has been summoned to evaluate the president’s proposal, while former prime minister Ludovic Orban has suggested the nomination may be part of a broader political scheme. Mureșan also announced he will go to Parliament for the confidence vote to showcase his programme and to clarify the position of other parties.
