Prosecution pulls former senator from witness list in Duterte impeachment trial

The prosecution announced it will no longer call former senator Antonio Trillanes IV as a witness in Vice President Sara Duterte's impeachment proceeding.

In the ongoing impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte, the prosecution has formally withdrawn its intention to present former senator Antonio Trillanes IV as a witness. Prosecutor Jinky Luistro told the impeachment court on Thursday that the prosecution would not pursue the witness slot for Trillanes, and no explanation was offered for the reversal. Trillanes is known for leaking documents in 2016 that detailed years of bank transactions involving then-presidential hopeful Rodrigo Duterte and his relatives.

Those records had been cited during earlier hearings, showing alignment with anti-money-laundering agency data. The impeachment panel had previously highlighted discrepancies between the Duterte family's reported wealth and the scale of the transactions revealed. The case continues without Trillanes's testimony.

Why it matters

The removal of a key witness could affect the evidence base in the high-profile impeachment of the Philippines' vice president.
