Public sector pay talks launch at Workplace Relations Commission after massive strike
Formal negotiations on a new public-sector pay deal begin at the Workplace Relations Commission following a nationwide strike involving over 300,000 workers.
After a nationwide walkout that saw more than 300,000 public-sector employees protest the terms of a new pay deal, the Workplace Relations Commission opened formal negotiations today. The framework, settled by Irish Congress of Trade Unions general secretary Owen Reidy, senior civil servant Oonagh Buckley and independent chair Kevin Foley, mandates that pay issues be addressed first, covering cost-of-living effects from 2021 through 2025 and throughout any future agreement.
The parties also highlighted the necessity of rebuilding trust in public-sector industrial relations. Taoiseach Micheál Martin said any settlement must deliver value for money and protect low-paid workers, while Public Expenditure Minister Jack Chambers praised the arrangement as a basis for constructive dialogue. The special arrangement is described as an exceptional measure for this dispute and not a precedent for future cases.
Why it matters
The talks will determine pay and working conditions for hundreds of thousands of public-sector employees, affecting services nationwide.
