Purra challenges Kokoomus with new austerity plan and calls for tighter fiscal policy
Perussuomalaiset leader Riikka Purra unveiled a fiscal-consolidation programme that mirrors Kokoomus' cuts and targets the independence fund, immigration spending and public sector budgets.
Riikka Purra, chair of Perussuomalaiset, used a briefing to launch the party’s austerity blueprint, which seeks savings similar to those announced by Kokoomus and includes scrapping the fund that finances independence celebrations. The proposal calls for cutting immigration-related social benefits, ending development aid, and eliminating the environment ministry, amounting to large cuts in public administration. Purra declared her party the "tightest fiscal party" in Finland and demanded that every able-aged citizen participate in the effort.
She criticised the size of the welfare state and suggested that tax revenues should be used solely for Finnish interests, while still supporting selected international commitments. The plan also hints at a pension indexation brake and a modest reduction in pension payouts, though details remain sparse. Opposition parties are expected to challenge the cuts, especially those affecting social services and low-income groups.
Why it matters
The proposal could reshape Finland's fiscal policy and influence the upcoming election battle between right-wing parties.
