Railroad drivers' union calls full-day strike across all Renfe companies

The Semaf union representing train drivers has announced a 24-hour walkout for all Renfe staff after failed mediation attempts.

The Semaf union, which represents the majority of Spain's train drivers, has ordered a 24-hour strike affecting every Renfe subsidiary and all crew members. The decision comes after mediation in the Conflict Commission failed to produce an agreement and a recent negotiation with Renfe executives, the Ministry of Transport and Mobility Sustainable, Adif, the State Railway Safety Agency and Renfe's own leadership reached no progress.

Union officials claim that earlier commitments on railway safety, emergency weather protocols, recruitment of new drivers, accident response and rolling-stock reliability have been left in an administrative deadlock. Their demands include stronger climate-emergency response, a shift toward a "Fair Culture," direct communication channels with the safety agency and labor inspectors, and protection of rest periods, pensions and promotion promises. Semaf also noted parallel strike actions planned for the Ouigo service, which will involve multiple days of partial and full stoppages.

Why it matters

A nationwide rail strike could disrupt passenger travel and freight, highlighting tensions over safety and staffing in Spain's rail system.
