Red Code emergency declared as heavy rain lashes Athens and islands

A severe weather system has triggered a Red Code alert for eight regions, with intense rain and strong winds hitting Athens and the Aegean.

A two-day storm system began delivering heavy rain across Greece on Tuesday, with the National Observatory of Athens classifying it as a Category 3 event. Rainfall rates surged in the Athens basin, while the low-pressure system moved eastward, affecting the islands and the southern mainland. The General Secretariat of Civil Protection placed eight regions under a Red Code alert, mobilising personnel and resources to address flood and wind risks.

The Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection warned of high flood potential and strong gusts reaching up to 9 bft in the Aegean. A public safety message was broadcast on 112, advising citizens to travel only when essential. The hazardous conditions are expected to ease by Wednesday afternoon.

Why it matters

The alert signals widespread disruption and flood risk for major population centers and islands.
