Republicans aim to push SAVE America voter ID provisions through reconciliation

With the SAVE America election-integrity bill stalled in the Senate, House Republicans are seeking to move its core provisions through budget reconciliation before the upcoming midterm elections. The targeted measures include a proof-of-citizenship mandate for voter registration and a nationwide photo-ID requirement. Rep. Bryan Steil, chair of the House Administration Committee, argued that reconciliation could reduce the Senate voting threshold to 50, making passage more feasible.

He noted ongoing discussions with administration officials and Senate members, while acknowledging the tight calendar. The White House, represented by OMB Director Russell Vought, has backed the reconciliation route, suggesting it as the most viable path. However, the Senate parliamentarian’s review and the Senate’s own budget framework could affect the bill’s progress.
