Rise in Israeli abductions of Palestinians targets West Bank farmers and villages

Palestinian officials say kidnappings and arbitrary arrests of Palestinians in the occupied West Bank have increased, especially against farmers and rural communities.

Palestinian officials and rights groups have warned that kidnappings and arbitrary detention of Palestinians by Israeli forces are on the rise across the occupied West Bank, focusing on farmers and Bedouin communities. Salah al-Khawaja, director of the Colonisation and Wall Resistance Commission’s central West Bank office, said the incidents often occur at improvised checkpoints and are accompanied by abuse. Amir Daoud, the commission’s documentation officer, said the attacks create fear among farmers and aim to weaken residents’ ties to their land.

UN OCHA recorded roughly 36 cases since October 2023, involving at least 50 Palestinians, including three children, and Al-Haq’s recent report confirms an increasing pattern. On Saturday, Voice of Palestine radio reported seven new abductions - three in Nahalin near Bethlehem, three in Qaffin north of Tulkarem and one farmer in Beit Imrin near Nablus - with their fate still unclear. Daoud accused the Israeli army of shielding perpetrators during some raids, citing the Qaffin incident as occurring under army protection.

Why it matters

The surge in abductions threatens the safety of West Bank residents and undermines their access to land and livelihoods.
