Rising gasoline costs force Michigan drivers to limit travel and reconsider voting

Gasoline prices above $4.60 per gallon in Michigan are causing residents like Gaudette and Debbie to stay home and cut back on trips.

Gasoline in Michigan now exceeds $4.60 per gallon, leading drivers like Gaudette in Harrison to replace his pickup with a more fuel-efficient vehicle and skip trips to Detroit that would cost about $20 in fuel. Senior resident Debbie, who declined to give her surname, calls the near-$5-per-gallon price "abhorrent" and says it prevents her from visiting her daughter 45 minutes away, a round-trip costing roughly $30. Fuel analyst Patrick De Haan highlighted that 2026 has already recorded 158 days with a national average above $4 per gallon, a historically painful threshold.

The motor organization AAA reports one outlet average at $4.33 per gallon, up from under $3 before President Donald Trump ordered an attack on Iran. Gaudette says the high price will influence his vote in the midterm congressional race, though he expresses little confidence in politicians overall.
