Romanian President Nicușor Dan vows state response to Black Sea vessel attacks

In Brussels, President Nicușor Dan said Romania will formulate a response to recent attacks on commercial ships in its Black Sea waters and plans talks with NATO and EU leaders.

President Nicușor Dan addressed reporters in Brussels, explaining that Romania has not yet issued a clear reaction to recent assaults on commercial vessels within its territorial waters of the Black Sea, as authorities are still collecting information. He mentioned a short conversation with the Bulgarian prime minister and confirmed plans for a meeting with the NATO secretary-general to enhance joint security measures.

Dan indicated that Romania will present its concerns to Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte and the European Council, seeking modest improvements in the council's conclusions. He stressed the importance of acquiring defensive hardware for the Black Sea and ensuring the operational readiness of the bilateral Black Sea centre managed by Romania and Bulgaria. Additionally, Dan referred to a coalition of 17 EU states supporting cohesion and agricultural funds, which he said helps preserve national financial envelopes.

Why it matters

The statement signals Romania's intent to address escalating maritime threats in the Black Sea and coordinate a broader NATO-EU response.
