Rubio says Greece deserves a powerful ambassador with full Trump backing

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio told Matthew Boil that Greece merits a strong ambassador who enjoys President Trump’s complete confidence.

In an interview, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio affirmed that Greece deserves a high-profile ambassador with direct access to President Trump. He stressed that the pending ambassadorial transition in Athens should not be seen as a downgrade of U.S.-Greek relations, calling the partnership vital for energy security, regional stability and NATO cooperation. Rubio praised Greece’s strategic location and its openness to energy exploration, noting its potential as a conduit for oil, gas and electricity between Europe, Africa and the Middle East.

He explained that the search for a suitable successor to one outlet ambassador is still in its initial phase and will require careful vetting. The minister also criticized European fuel-price policies and linked Russia’s energy dependence to the war in Ukraine, while defending a temporary easing of sanctions on Russian diesel to serve U.S. economic interests.
