Russian missile and drone barrage kills 16 and wounds 59 across Ukraine
Russian strikes across Ukraine killed at least 16 people and injured 59, with Kyiv hit by multiple waves of missiles and drones overnight.
Russian military operations intensified on Sept. 24, deploying 282 drones—including jet-powered types—and a mix of Zircon, Iskander-M, S-400 and KN-23 missiles against Ukraine. Kyiv endured three waves of ballistic missiles overnight, killing two and injuring eight, while residential blocks, a maternity hospital and critical infrastructure were struck. Across the country the assaults caused at least 16 fatalities and 59 injuries, with the highest death tolls in Donetsk Oblast (eight killed) and Kharkiv Oblast (six killed).
Ukrainian air defenses intercepted 227 of the aerial threats, downing the majority of drones and several missiles. Governors in the affected oblasts described damage to farms, hospitals, schools, shopping centres and pipelines, and noted repeated attacks on dozens of settlements.
Why it matters
The attacks show Russia's escalating strike capability and the ongoing humanitarian toll on Ukrainian civilians.
How the sides frame it
MODERATE AGREEMENTAll camps report a Russian drone strike that killed a 14-year-old in Kyiv, but left-leaning coverage stresses the wide-scale barrage and nationwide casualties, centrist coverage stresses the human tragedy and Zelensky’s moral condemnation, while right-leaning coverage stresses the tactical angle and Russian claims about targeting defence facilities and the difficulty of intercepting new drones.
LEFT
Frames the event as a massive, indiscriminate barrage of drones and missiles that inflicted widespread civilian deaths and damage across Ukraine.
CENTER
Frames the strike as a horrific civilian tragedy, emphasizing the teenage victim and Zelensky’s condemnation of the attack as savage and without military logic.
RIGHT
Frames the incident as a specific tactical strike, highlighting Russian statements about targeting defence-industry sites and the challenge posed by high-altitude, fast-flying drones.
