Russian strike kills woman in Zelenskyy’s hometown; NATO jet shoots down drone over Romania
A missile and drone attack on Kryvyi Rig killed a woman and injured six, while a NATO Spanish fighter intercepted a drone that entered Romanian airspace.
A combined missile and drone assault on Kryvyi Rig, the hometown of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, killed a civilian woman and left six others wounded, the regional governor reported early Sunday. In Kyiv, authorities said a ballistic missile strike later that night injured one person and ignited fires in the Obolonsky and Holosiivskyi districts. Separately, Romania’s Defence Ministry confirmed that a Spanish-operated F-18, participating in a NATO air-policing mission, intercepted and destroyed a drone that illegally entered Romanian airspace, marking the fourth drone downed in the country this year.
The ministry did not specify where the drone originated. Romania, sharing a long border with Ukraine, has repeatedly experienced Russian drone incursions as Moscow intensifies its campaign against Ukrainian targets. The United Nations Human Rights Monitoring Mission noted that civilian casualties in Ukraine reached their highest level since 2022, with at least 437 killed and 2,610 injured in July. The incidents underscore the expanding geographic scope of the conflict and the heightened vigilance of NATO forces in the region.
Why it matters
The attacks show the war’s spillover into neighboring NATO territory and the ongoing threat to civilians across Ukraine.
