Russian strikes trigger power cuts in twelve Ukrainian regions on Oct. 20
Ukrenergo said Russian attacks caused outages across twelve Ukrainian regions on Oct. 20, prompting nationwide industrial load-shedding.
On Oct. 20, Ukrenergo confirmed that Russian assaults on energy facilities caused power outages in twelve Ukrainian regions, including Kirovohrad, Zhytomyr, Lviv, Odesa, Rivne, Ternopil, Khmelnytskyi, Zaporizhia, Donetsk, Kharkiv, Sumy and Chernihiv. The operator said it must impose load-limiting schedules for industry nationwide and schedule hourly outages in selected locales to avoid overloading damaged infrastructure.
Artem Nekrasov, Ukraine's First Deputy Minister of Energy, described the strikes as a deliberate, systematic effort by Russia to cripple the energy sector. He noted that consumers in the affected oblasts were left without electricity. The attacks come as Russia escalates its drone and missile campaign ahead of Ukraine's fifth winter since the 2022 invasion. The previous day, President Volodymyr Zelensky reported a wave of strikes that hit 28 substations and other critical sites, using 16 ballistic missiles and more than 200 drones.
Why it matters
