Sanchez to address nation at 9 a.m. from Moncloa on possible early election
Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez will speak at 9 a.m. on Monday from Moncloa to reveal his stance on an early election, after cancelling his morning agenda and that of several ministers.
After a weekend of reflection, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez is set to address the nation at 9 a.m. on Monday from the Palacio de la Moncloa, where he will announce whether an early election will be called. The Presidency has cleared his agenda, including a planned inauguration of a National Congress of the Family Business, and other cabinet members such as Mónica García and Sira Rego have also cancelled their engagements.
The move comes amid concerns that the PSOE could suffer a result comparable to the party’s worst performance in three decades, recorded in 2015 under Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba. Within both Moncloa and the royal residence at Ferraz, many assume an election is now unavoidable. A decision to call elections now would leave the emerging Sumar platform, or its successor under the Frente Amplio label, with little time to run a pre-campaign before a candidate is formally presented. Officials argue that one outlet legislative term is effectively stalled and that extending it artificially would serve no purpose, while they claim conditions are now favorable for mobilising their electorate.
Why it matters
The timing of a snap election could dramatically alter Spain's political balance and the PSOE's chances in upcoming polls.
