Sánchez warns that Vox turns democratic alternation into regression

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said that while power alternation is healthy, the presence of Vox represents a step backward, during a TV interview.

During an interview on the comedy program La Revuelta, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez emphasized that regular changes in government are a sign of a healthy democracy, but warned that the inclusion of the far-right Vox in the political equation turns that principle into a regression. He referenced the recent censorship of a Federico Lorca play by the Valladolid city council and the Junta de Castilla y León, calling such actions incompatible with 21st-century Spain.

Sánchez highlighted the contributions of his deputy and coalition partner Yolanda Díaz, expressing puzzlement over her marginalisation within the broader left coalition. He dismissed Gabriel Rufián’s attempt at uniting the left as ineffective, while thanking Esquerra Republicana for its parliamentary support. Acknowledging that the administration could have managed the situation in Ceuta better, he defended the government's overall migration response and noted that he no longer aligns with the political views of former prime minister Felipe González.

Why it matters

Sánchez’s remarks signal how the Spanish government views the rise of the far-right and its impact on coalition politics.
