Scotland braces for Storm Boelo as rail services face closures and speed limits

Network Rail will suspend several train routes in Scotland from Saturday night through Sunday as Storm Boelo brings high winds, and remaining services will run at reduced speeds.

Network Rail announced that, beginning Saturday night, services south and west of Kilwinning will cease at 9 p.m., with the Oban and Mallaig lines shutting down at 10 p.m. Sunday sees further suspensions on the Kyle of Lochalsh to Achnashellach line and the Wick to Helmsdale service. All other trains will be subject to reduced speed limits throughout Scotland. The closures respond to an amber weather alert for Storm Boelo, which could bring gusts up to 80 mph.

Craig Gorman, head of operational weather strategy for Network Rail Scotland, said the decisions were made to prioritise safety despite the significant impact on travellers. Passengers have been urged to check their journeys before departing.

Why it matters
