Search continues after multi‑storey building collapses in Nairobi’s Eastleigh district

Around 1 pm on Friday, a multi‑storey building under construction collapsed in the densely populated Eastleigh neighbourhood of Nairobi, creating a massive mound of concrete and steel on a busy commercial street. Police chief Issa Mohamud said the project had more than ten upper levels under work when it gave way, and officials fear up to seven people may be trapped beneath the rubble. Rescue teams arrived quickly, using makeshift poles and later an excavator to move reinforced concrete, while police fired tear gas to disperse looters and secure the perimeter.

An injured woman has been rescued and taken to hospital, and authorities warn that the unstable remains could cause a further collapse onto a neighbouring structure. Nairobi governor Johnson Sakaja noted the building had received construction approval but lacked a usage permit.
