Senator Lacson urges redirecting Senate budget cuts to fund El Niño readiness

Senator Panfilo Lacson proposes using the savings from the Senate's 2027 budget cuts to finance preparations for the upcoming Super El Niño and other priorities.

Lacson, who heads the Senate accounts committee, said the chamber plans to trim about P2 billion from its 2027 budget as a model of fiscal restraint. He suggested that the resulting savings be redirected toward El Niño mitigation measures and other government needs. The move follows a Supreme Court decision that declared parts of the 2024-2026 budgets unconstitutional. Lacson hopes the reallocation will demonstrate responsible budgeting to the House of Representatives.

Why it matters

Redirecting budget cuts to El Niño prep could improve disaster readiness while promoting fiscal discipline in the Philippines.
