Shark-like dogfish spotted swimming through flooded streets of Surf City, New Jersey

A severe storm sweeping the East Coast has left parts of Surf City, New Jersey, underwater, prompting locals to record a dogfish that looks like a shark gliding through the flooded streets. The fish, usually between 60 cm and 1 m, was observed swimming along a residential alley before moving on. The same weather system has resulted in a tree falling in Brooklyn, killing one person, and has led to power outages across multiple states.

Large-scale events such as an Ed Sheeran concert near Boston and a festival in Central Park featuring Lenny Kravitz, Lauryn Hill and Alicia Keys were cancelled. Hundreds of flights were grounded as wind gusts reached 70 km/h along the coast. Oceanographers note that warm water can drive such species closer to shore.
