Shashi Tharoor Echoes Rahul Gandhi, Calls for Election Commission Chief's Resignation

Lok Sabha MP Shashi Tharoor supported Rahul Gandhi's demand that Election Commission chief Gyanesh Kumar step down amid protests over alleged roll-revision irregularities.

Shashi Tharoor, a Lok Sabha member from Thiruvananthapuram, amplified Rahul Gandhi’s call for the resignation of Election Commission chief Gyanesh Kumar, linking it to broader governmental change. In a post on X, Tharoor quoted Gandhi’s Hindi statement that both Kumar and one outlet government must go for democracy to be repaired. He also highlighted a poem by Ramdhari Singh Dinkar, urging citizens to heed the “thunderous sounds” of change.

Gandhi has been spearheading the INDIA bloc’s protests, accusing Kumar of facilitating “vote chori” and demanding he step down. The opposition’s push follows one outlet's investigation revealing that commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi formally objected at least fourteen times to the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls over the past ten months.

Why it matters

The controversy challenges the credibility of India's election process and could affect public confidence ahead of future polls.
