Socialist State Rep. Angie Nixon Upsets Alex Vindman in Florida Senate Primary

Socialist state Rep. Angie Nixon beat Alex Vindman in Florida’s Democratic Senate primary and will face Republican Sen. Ashley Moody in November.

Socialist-aligned state Representative Angie Nixon pulled off an unexpected victory in Florida’s Democratic Senate primary, defeating impeachment-whistleblower Alex Vindman with an AP-projected 55.8% to 44.3% after 89% of ballots were tallied. Nixon, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, outperformed Vindman despite his substantial fundraising advantage of more than $16 million versus her under $1 million and his higher name recognition as a former National Security Council official whose testimony helped trigger President Donald Trump’s first impeachment.

Vindman, who is Jewish and has criticized antisemitism within the DSA wing of the party, is the brother of Rep. Eugene Vindman. The primary win positions Nixon to challenge Republican Sen. Ashley Moody, appointed after Marco Rubio became Secretary of State, in the November general election, though nonpartisan forecasters consider the race non-competitive given Moody’s strong lead in recent polls. The outcome reflects a broader trend of insurgent socialist candidates succeeding in intra-party contests across the country.
