Southeast Asia’s Urban Rail Networks Surge with Billion-Dollar Projects Across Major Cities

Cities across Southeast Asia have added more than 400 km of urban rail since 2015 and are planning at least another 200 km for the coming decade.

Since 2015, Southeast Asia has built more than 400 km of new urban rail, extending systems in Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta, Manila, Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, with additional lines slated for the next decade. Billion-dollar projects have lifted capacity, pushing Bangkok’s ridership from 359 million in 2017 to 520 million last year and Kuala Lumpur’s to 330 million in 2025. Chinese-backed high-speed rail runs in Indonesia and Laos, and similar projects are progressing in Thailand and Malaysia.

New ventures such as Malaysia’s Shah Alam Line and Manila’s upcoming MRT illustrate expansion beyond capitals. Vietnam’s metro rollout is slowed by land-acquisition hurdles but is expected to pick up. The boom reflects strong economic growth and diversified financing, including Chinese capital, Japanese development funds, the Asian Development Bank and domestic investors, setting the stage for continued transit growth.
