Spain's anti-corruption prosecutor narrows judge Biedma's role to alleged calumny case
The Fiscalía Anticorrupción has limited Judge Beatriz Biedma's participation in the PSOE “cloacas” investigation, recognizing only a possible calumny offense.
In the ongoing probe of the PSOE “cloacas” scandal, Judge Beatriz Biedma requested to join the investigation on multiple grounds, including false accusation, obstruction of justice, and threats. The Fiscalía Anticorrupción examined each claim and determined that only a potential calumny offense met the criteria for her participation. It rejected the other allegations, citing lack of formal complaints, insufficient documentary proof, and the fact that no judicial actions resulted from the reported complaints.
The prosecutor also highlighted that references to a YouTube channel and agenda notes did not constitute concrete evidence. While Biedma submitted a review of the YouTube material to Judge Pedraz, the prosecutor urged her to provide more substantive proof before any further action.
Why it matters
The decision limits a judge's involvement in a high-profile political corruption probe, shaping the scope of the investigation.
