Spanish government says overseas vote could tip balance in upcoming elections

The Sánchez government intensified pressure on the Supreme Court to lift a precautionary suspension of voting rights for naturalised Spaniards granted citizenship through the grandchildren law, citing the sanctity of democratic participation. In a ministry statement, officials admitted that the CERA (Census of Absent Residents) vote might be pivotal in determining the outcome in up to nine constituencies with very close results.

Provinces mentioned include Cantabria, Guipúzcoa, Girona, Barcelona, Tarragona, Albacete, Madrid, Sevilla, Málaga, Santa Cruz de Tenerife and La Palma de Gran Canaria. The vote count will start on Friday and finish on the following Monday, potentially reshaping the final seat distribution. The government has also campaigned in South America to mobilise these new voters ahead of the 2027 general election.
