Spider-Man expected to stay atop box office as Insidious aims for strong second place

Sony's "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" is projected to keep the top spot this weekend, while the new "Insidious: Out of the Further" looks set to finish second.

Sony's "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" is anticipated to retain the No. 1 position in its fourth weekend at the North American box office. The sixth "Insidious" entry, "Out of the Further," is expected to claim the second spot, continuing the franchise's pattern of modest production costs and solid returns. The horror sequel follows the storyline of "The Red Door" and introduces a new family confronting the supernatural realm known as the Further.

Also debuting this weekend are Lionsgate's action-thriller with Jason Statham and a comedy headlined by Isla Fisher, Leslie Mann, Anna Faris and Michelle Buteau, neither of which is forecast to break out commercially. The weekend's box office hierarchy remains dominated by Sony's two releases, with Christopher Nolan's "The Odyssey" still drawing steady earnings in its sixth week.
