STAN and SPOLU begin coalition talks in Prague after election results

Representatives of the winning STAN movement and the SPOLU coalition met at Prague City Hall to start negotiations on forming a governing alliance.

Following the completion of the election tally, the STAN movement and the SPOLU coalition convened at Prague City Hall for their inaugural coalition negotiation session. Petr Hlaváček arrived representing the victorious STAN, while Tomáš Portlík spoke for SPOLU, which was led into the election by ODS figure Tomáš Portlík. Both delegations appeared upbeat, answering reporters with jokes. Hlaváček joked about having a "beautiful majority," while Portlík clarified that the majority is narrow, lacking two seats in the 65-member council.

They said they would first hash out details between themselves and have not yet decided on inviting a third partner. Hlaváček added that talks with other groups, including the Pirates, would follow, with a public update expected after the first round of discussions.

Why it matters

The talks will determine the composition of Prague's city government after a closely contested election.
