Starlink builds India-specific network to meet local security rules
Starlink's Business Operations VP Lauren Dreyer said the company has installed dedicated ground infrastructure in India to satisfy the country's security and regulatory requirements.
During a presentation at India Mobile Congress 2026, Starlink Business Operations Vice President Lauren Dreyer detailed the company's effort to tailor its satellite service for the Indian market. She said Starlink has already built a domestic infrastructure comprising 20 gateway stations equipped with hundreds of antennas, ensuring that all Indian user data remains on Indian soil. The architecture includes controls at every operational layer to satisfy India's security and regulatory standards.
While the Indian government has issued licences to three firms for satellite communications, each must still obtain spectrum allocation and security clearance before commencing operations. Dreyer emphasized that these investments position Starlink to begin service as soon as the necessary approvals are granted.
