State Department launches Inspector General probe into ambassador Kimberly Guilfoyle
The U.S. State Department’s Office of Inspector General has opened an investigation into Ambassador Kimberly Guilfoyle following allegations of a financial request tied to her diplomatic role.
The Office of Inspector General of the U.S. State Department has initiated a formal inquiry into Ambassador Kimberly Guilfoyle and her embassy after Eric Deters, a Trump-aligned legal adviser, alleged that she asked him to pay a substantial sum on his American Express card. Deters provided one outlet with a PDF containing text and Signal chats that he says demonstrate the request, but he has not fulfilled the payment. Guilfoyle’s attorney has not commented publicly and has challenged the credibility of the messages.
Vice President JD Vance described the accusations as coming from a single source and emphasized the need for evidence before drawing conclusions. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who was in Athens with Guilfoyle, declined to discuss the matter, stating he could not verify the report’s accuracy. The State Department and the Inspector General’s office both declined to confirm or deny details of any investigation, noting that such probes of ambassadors are rare but have precedent.
Why it matters
The probe could affect U.S. diplomatic credibility and raise questions about ethical standards for ambassadors.
