Storm Austen expected to deliver 50-60mph gusts across southern UK

The Met Office warns that Storm Austen will bring wind gusts of 50-60mph to much of southern Britain, with the strongest coastal areas possibly seeing speeds over 70mph.

Storm Austen is set to affect the southern United Kingdom later this week, bringing wind gusts of 50-60mph across most of the warning area, according to the Met Office. Tom Crabtree, the deputy chief forecaster, noted that the storm’s precise track is still being determined, but peak gusts above 70mph are possible on the most exposed coastal sections. Authorities are continuously monitoring the situation and may adjust warnings as forecasts become clearer.

The Met Office’s naming convention runs from September through August, using an alphabetical list that begins with Austen this season. Names are chosen from public suggestions and honor notable figures, with Austen named after the first director of Met Éireann. The agency stresses that naming storms helps the public understand and prepare for severe weather risks.

Why it matters

Strong winds could disrupt travel, damage property, and pose safety risks for residents in southern Britain.
