Storm Boelo set to unleash heavy rain and wind across Norway overnight
Storm Boelo is forecast to bring its strongest conditions tonight, with up to 60 mm of rain in Vestfold, Telemark and Buskerud and orange flood warnings.
The storm system Boelo, which recently traversed the United Kingdom, is set to strike Norway during the night, bringing a combination of heavy rain and strong southeast winds. According to meteorologist Sigrid Marie Vildskog Auganæs, the hardest hit areas will be Vestfold, Telemark and Buskerud, where up to 60 mm of precipitation could fall within a 12-hour period, triggering orange warnings for floods, landslides and mudslides.
In Larvik, three people were evacuated as a precaution, and the municipality’s mayor Birgitte Gulla Løken said emergency services are on standby, with support from the Red Cross. Fjordline has already cancelled numerous ferry routes from Stavanger, Bergen and Kristiansand for the weekend, and some Saturday crossings were also dropped. BKK, which operates much of the western power network, issued a yellow warning for its grid and readied additional staff and equipment to address potential wind-related damage. Authorities advise residents to avoid coastal areas, as waves may surge unexpectedly, and warn that even Oslo could see up to 30 mm of rain in 24 hours, raising the risk of localized flooding.
