Strong winds force multiple flights to divert from Basel airport
Severe gusts on Sunday disrupted air traffic at Euro-Airport Basel, causing several flights to be rerouted, with two landing in Zurich.
On Sunday, a powerful windstorm swept across the Basel area, leading Euro-Airport Basel to redirect multiple flights. Early in the day, a Wizz Air Airbus A321 Neo bound for Geneva from Bratislava was forced to avoid Basel but later completed the trip. A Pegasus Airbus A321 Neo departing Istanbul diverted to Zurich at 12:28 and subsequently flew back to Istanbul.
SkyUp Airlines' Boeing 737 from Hurghada spent more than thirty minutes circling near Colmar before the crew elected to land in Zurich, later continuing to Vienna. Additionally, a KLM Embraer E175 from Amsterdam landed in Stuttgart rather than Basel. Zurich Airport faced several weather-induced delays, requiring runway changes, but no flights were rerouted there.
Why it matters
Travelers and airlines must adjust to sudden weather disruptions that can cause delays and rerouting.
